HISTORY

A LITTLE HISTORY as told by Mrs. "S": Kingsbury Hill is the name shown on the map for our 1000 foot elevation hill. It is named for the Kingsbury family who settled here, cleared some land, built the house and started to farm in 1787. The original barn was destroyed and our present beauty replaced it in 1946 when the property became an apple farm. The idea for camp began in 1966 when my husband and I moved to our 165 acre hilltop with our son and two daughters and their horses, Arritor, Arreuben and their mother, Arribonita. The girls' horse loving friends began to visit for extended periods of time to ride with them and enjoy the farm. A horse lover myself, I had earned my horse as a child and progressed in my riding by working for lessons and helping a wonderful old matriarch of the Morgan Horse world. When I went to camp, I remember waiting anxiously for my two weekly riding periods and yearning to be near the horses to learn all I could while I was there. Later as a counselor and teacher, I heard again and again from my campers and students; "Riding is the best part of camp." Why not have a camp emphasizing riding where horse lovers could immerse themselves in their sport and come as close to experiencing a horse of their own as possible. So Kingsbury Hill Riding Camp began with eight girls in 1967. Now we are welcoming daughters of a few of our first campers. It is exciting and rewarding to watch nearly a generation pass and feel the strong family ties to Kingsbury Hill that have been developed over the passing years.
